LONG Group bike/walk tour of downtown Newburyport Ma. Rail/Trail, High Street, and Plum Island. 3hours 17 miles. Learn the history, hear the stories, see great sights, visit the shops and eateries of Newburyport. 
  Stage 1. We start at the Tannery, ride to downtown on Water Street. Tour Market Square. Learn the story of how Newburyport was founded. See where the Tea Party started in the late 1700's. Hear about the fire that burned down the downtown center in 1811. Then how it was rebuilt, and how it was almost torn down by Urban Renewal in the mid 1970's.  Walk pass the Firehouse to to Merrimac River, see the birth place of the US Coast Guard. See the daily activity around the boat docks. Then ride the "Rail Trail" up to the Train Station and back. Bike along the river to the Towle building then up to High St. Ride past the High school. Stop at the Dexter House, the Mall and head out to Plum Island. All this time riding along one of the most beautifully Historic Districts in New England.
 Stage2. Journey out to Plum Island via the P.I.Turnpike. Learn the history, and the geography of Plum Island. See one of the oldest airports in America. Ride over the bridge on the Island, see the different neighborhoods. Stare out at the Atlantic ocean, ride to the North Point boats docks and look down the river to Newburyport and across to Salisbury. Bike back to Newburyport on the Turnpike and ride past Joppa flats and see the last of the old "Clam Shacks". Back to the Tannery, and a short Q&A period.
  Many opportunities along the way for rest stops, take pictures, grab snacks and drinks. 
Short.Stage 1.Newburyport. Group walking/riding group tour of Downtown Newburyport and new Rail/Trail,High Street. 90 min. 6 miles. The downtown portion of the long ride.Departure: Tannery
Short.Stage2. Plum Island Group bike/walk tour. the Plum Island portion of the long tour, plus the State Park 90 min. 10 miles. Departure: P.I. Airport.
Morning and Afternoon tours.
Departure: 9:00am and 1:00pm

Ability to handle a bike. Ability to walk a mile.
All Tours/Rides are lead with full road support, cue sheets.
Recommended items to bring:light snacks, sports drinks or water, sun screen, clothing appropriate for weather,and a camera. 
Helmets are required.
You will have enough time to ride, sight see, take pictures, learn the history of Newburyport and Plum Island and shop.
Travel Option:Take the Train to Newburyport, Rent-a-Bike near the Train Station. Ride to the Tannery.
Bike rentals are available at the Tannery.

Bikes are equipped with a water bottle cage and kickstand where appropriate. All rentals include a helmet and lock. Please bring your own clipless pedals and shoes if you prefer, otherwise basic platform pedals will be provided.
